I met Darion Gates at the Fremont Youth Foundation Stop the Violence Back to School Block Party. He had laser-light focus, a can-do spirit and a contagious attitude.
“You’ve been working hard all day. Tell me why you are here today.”
“I grew up over here. I am giving back to my community because when I was young, no one gave back to me. I can make a change in some way. I work for my dad, who owns a barbershop. I try to tell these kids that violence isn’t always the answer. Go out there and find a career path so that you aren’t getting into trouble. Go make something with your life.”
